Christmas at the Museum Shop

Shop 1If you're looking for a special or unique gift this Christmas, then make sure you visit the Museum Shop at the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery (TMAG).

The shop stocks a wide range of gifts suitable for all ages and tastes, from books and creative toys to exquisite jewellery and artisan crafts made by local designers. It also has a wonderful selection of Colonial art books including those featuring the works of John Glover and William Charles Piguenit.

To help get your Christmas shopping started, TMAG Director Janet Carding has chosen her favourite items from the shop's extensive selection – so read on for some gift inspiration!

Shop 2For adults

Janet suggests the Splinter Jewellery range featuring earrings, pendants, bangles and more, starting at $30.00 and all made from local timber products by Tasmanian artist Olivia Bosveld.

The shop also stocks a stunning range of jewellery made by Tasmanian Aboriginal women, including mariner shell necklaces and quill pendants priced from $29.95 upwards. Other options include beautiful glass stud earrings by Christine Hannan ($25.00) or glass pendants by Wendy Helleman ($49.95).

There's also a huge range of nautical gifts, such as fob watches and compasses beginning at $34.95.

If you're looking for a great holiday read, Janet recommends a new release she is currently reading herself: Corruption and Skullduggery by Dr Alison Alexander ($49.95)

Shop 3For children

The shop stocks a great range of creative toys, as well as soft toys including dinosaurs, Tasmanian tigers, devils, wombats and quolls.

This summer, TMAG is launching an exciting new exhibition called Pattern Play, celebrating the wonderful world of patterns. To help introduce children to pattern-making and creative expression, Janet suggests selecting from the huge range of colouring-in books starting from $9.95.

The shop also has a great range of children's books from Tasmanian authors such as Marion and Steve Isham, as well as Alice Hansen.

And finally, if you are looking for a last minute stocking filler, then you can't go past the TMAG mug at $14.95 or choose a pen crafted from local timber.

Every purchase from the Museum Shop helps to support TMAG's activities and so it is a great way to contribute to your museum.

The Museum Shop is open Tuesday to Sunday from 10:00 am – 4:00 pm.
