Islands to Ice

Islands To Ice

The journey to Antarctica begins here.  Voyage south across wild oceans, venture through windswept island worlds and dive into stories behind the icy expanse of the great southern wilderness in a reimagined ’Islands to Ice exhibition.  Islands to Ice brings the astonishing wonders of the Southern Ocean and Antarctic region to the shores of Tasmania. From the animals that inhabit these special environments to the hidden stories of the people who work and play on the frozen continent, explore this unique and captivating world right here in Hobart.

Featuring objects, artefacts, specimens and artwork that will take you through time and place, this rich and varied exhibition brings natural history, the humanities and the sciences together.

  • From the smallest lifeforms to the largest whale. Discover the science and adventure of the frozen continent.
  • Discover the work of scientists, artists and adventurers in this vast region. Islands to Ice explores the hidden stories of Antarctica and the Southern Ocean, from the people who have always lived in this region to the most recent travellers.
  • What lives here? How do people survive on the frozen continent? Families will make discoveries small (from the games people play) and large (the size of a whale) in Islands to Ice.

The Islands to Ice exhibition has been proudly supported by Australian Marine Parks. This ‘Our Marine Parks’ project has received funding from the Australian Government.

TMAG would like to thank the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water, the Australian Antarctic Division, the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation and Antarctic Tasmania for their assistance and contributions.
