Venture Beyond the Watergate

Beyond the Watergate

Visitors are being invited to journey beyond the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery’s (TMAG) historic Watergate for a series of after-hours events designed to open up the museum to new audiences.

Beyond the Watergate gets underway on Wednesday 27 July, and will feature an evening of food, drink and entertainment at the museum once a month, targeted at adult visitors.

It’s all part of TMAG’s recently-released Strategic Plan, which is about welcoming and connecting the diverse range of visitors who come to the museum.

As part of the Plan’s first strategic outcome, TMAG has committed to increase opening at times that suit visitors, including the recently-announced expanded summer opening hours, as well as late night openings.

Through Beyond the Watergate, TMAG hopes to create a vibrant evening public program aimed at visitors aged 18-35, traditionally a smaller portion of its audience, which will position the museum as the place to go for a cultural evening experience in Hobart.

The events will feature an eclectic mix of entertainment from bands to burlesque, as well as plenty of food and drink provided by local Tasmanian producers, amidst the surrounds of TMAG’s exhibitions and historic buildings.

The premiere event will include music by local artists Dan Vandermeer and Nic Courto, and dancers from Miss Kitty's Meow will also perform burlesque shows in the historic Bond Store Basement.

Beyond the Watergate will take place on Wednesday nights once a month until November 2016. Future events are planned to focus on a variety of themes, such as a ladies’ night and a masquerade ball.

Beyond the Watergate is at TMAG on Wednesday 27 July from 6:00 pm – 9:00 pm. Entry is free and restricted to those 18+. For more information about this, and future events, visit: http://www.tmag.tas.gov.au/beyondthewatergate
